Presenting background and content of the R&I roadmap 2017-2026 to be endorsed by the ETIP SNET
8 December 2016 – 17:00
Plaza Hotel, Boulevard Adolphe Max 118-126, 1000 Brussels
The Grid+Storage consortium was selected by the European Commission (DG Energy) to support the development of a European Research and Innovation (R&I) roadmap integrating energy storage and other flexibility options into grid activities, both at electricity transmission and distribution levels.
Throughout two years (January 2015 – December 2016), the following activities have been implemented by the Grid+Storage consortium:
- Public consultations:stakeholders of the electricity value chain and of other energy networks have been consulted at EU level to identify R&I needs on smart grids and energy storage;
- Project monitoring:120+ major smart grid and energy storage projects at national and cross-border levels in Europe have been analysed, as well as 50+ projects outside Europe to support the definition of future R&I needs;
- Regional Knowledge Sharing Workshops:state-of-the-art national projects have been assessed across Europe thanks to 9 workshops covering all European countries;
- Knwoledge Sharing Platform: R&I project participants have been invited to share the knowledge obtained from ongoing or completed projects on the GridInnovation-online platform.
These activities have allowed Grid+Storage to analyse the needs and propose a new 10-year R&I roadmap addressing the challenges of the energy system, with a focus on electricity, in the decade to come.
This work paves the way of the future work of the ETIP SNET, the European Technology and Innovation Platform for Smart Networks for the Energy Transition, which gathers actors from electricity, storage and ICT but also heating, transport and gas sectors with the aim of setting out a vision for R&I for smart networks, storage and integrated systems and engage stakeholders in this vision.

About Grid+Storage: Grid+Storage is a service contract for the European Commission, DG Energy (H2020 tender nr. ENER C2/2014-642). It is coordinated by TECHNOFI and gathers EASE, EDSO, ENTSO-E, RSE and VITO. More information at http://www.gridplusstorage.eu/.
About the ETIP SNET: European Technology and Innovation Platforms (ETIPs) have been created in the framework of the new Integrated Roadmap of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (the SET Plan) – Europe’s energy R&I master plan. The ETIP for Smart Networks for the Energy Transition (ETIP SNET) is the new integrated advisory environment that reflects the increasing need to consider smart electricity networks within the wider energy system. It will set-out a vision for research and innovation for smart networks, storage and integrated systems and engage stakeholders in this vision. It will also identify innovation barriers, notably related to regulation and financing.
